Volunteer Update 02-02-10

A Brush With Kindness
Work began at the Combs home last Friday, 1/29, when Sarah Bohn, Howard Horner, Brandt Purvis, Dave Williams, Steve Wade, Aden Yusuf, Al Harris, Sarah Awwad and Marlena Kauer turned out to install a new front entry door, storm door and a railing around the front porch. It looks great! See photos of their work in the Photo Gallery . Work is planned for this Friday, 2/5, 10 a.m. – 3 p.m. and Saturday, 2/6, 8 a.m. – 3 p.m. when we will begin roof tear off and replacement. We wish we could predict the weather, but since we can’t we’ll proceed as though the weather will cooperate. If you’d like to volunteer, please click this link for the Volunteer Calendar . If you’d like to provide lunch on Friday or Saturday, please call Traci at 703-369-6708 or [ e-mail ] . The Combs home is sponsored by “Families of the Manassas Presbyterian Church” who include Raymond and Mary Langley, Jerry and Cindy Zumbrum, Gordon and Carolyn Grandjean, Gene Barndt, David and Ruth Williams, George and Mary Moniuszko, Scott and Donna Myers, Albert and Barbara Ferguson, Neil and Margaret Bagnell, Matt and Linda Wendle and Donald and MaryJo Van Wingerden.

Anika Haley, Gregory Gibson, Marlena Kauer and Jim Biggs braved the weather on Saturday, 1/30, to work at the Birch Street cleanup for a few hours. See photos of this project in the Photo Gallery . Work will continue at Birch Street on Saturday 2/6, 8:30 a.m. – 3 p.m., if we have Team Leaders. Team Leadership involves checking people into the worksite, making sure everyone has signed waivers, deciding what part of the cleanup can be tackled that day and directing the volunteers to accomplish it in a safe manner. Of course, taking photos of your group of volunteers and their outstanding work is part of the job, too! Please [ RSVP ] if you’d like to Team Lead on 2/6. Click this link for the Volunteer Calendar if you’d like to sign up as a volunteer. If you’d like to provide lunch for the volunteers, call Traci at 703-369-6708 or reply by [ e-mail ] .

Family Selection Orientations
We are currently seeking family partners for home ownership. If you know someone who has lived in Prince William County, Manassas or Manassas Park for at least the last year and is interested in partnering with Habitat for Humanity to own their own home, please invite them to join us for an orientation. Criteria that will be evaluated for Family Partnership include: need for adequate housing, ability to pay for a mortgage (earn 30% - 50% of area median income) and willingness to partner with Habitat for Humanity. Family Partners purchase their home at cost (no profit is added to the sale price) and they put in “sweat equity” to rehab their home and the homes of other families. Attendance at an orientation is required to receive an application. The next orientations will be held:

Thursday, February 11, 7:00 – 8:00 p.m., Manassas Baptist Church, Parlor Room, 8800 Sudley Road, Manassas, VA 20110

Wednesday, February 24, 7:00 – 8:00 p.m., Prince William County Development Services Building, 5 County Complex Court, Room 107A, Prince William, VA 22192

New Home Ownership Rehab!
We have a ratified contract on a home in Dale City for one of our two new family partners, The Yusuf-Ismail family! If all goes well, we will close on that property and start rehabbing at the end of February. Aden and Mariam have lived in their apartment for five years and their four children, Omir, Leila, Abdirahman, and Aragson, ages 4 – 9, are so excited to have a home and yard where they can play safely. We are seeking sponsorships that will help us with our home ownership program property purchases and rehabs. If you are interested in being a Sponsor, please call Traci at 703-369-6708 or [ e-mail ] .
